Barbara Dell Skaggs, age 88, passed away at 3:20 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at Quaker Hill Manor. She was born July 15, 1929, in Miami, Okla. Her parents were L.E. "Pete" and Sybil (Williams) McGregor. She had lived in Baxter Springs, Kan. most all of her life, graduating from Baxter High School with the class of 1947.
Barbara had tried her hand at many small jobs, but her primary role was homemaker. As the children grew up, Barbara spent a few years as a hairdresser, followed by years involved in the craft business, but her greatest role was serving those in need. For 19 years Barbara, along with her faithful follower/husband Evert, became the face and foundation of the Ministerial Alliance Thrift Shop, where they spent countless hours helping others.
She was an active member of the Baxter Springs First Christian Church, where she was known for her leadership in organizing the crafts for their annual Bazaar and Funeral Dinner Chicken Casserole. Barbara considered serving others was her life's calling. In her free time she enjoyed quilting, gardening, and cooking.
In addition to her parents, and husband of 67 years, Evert, she was preceded in death by one son, Jim Skaggs, and one sister, Jill Ann McCraken.
She is survived by one son, Steve Skaggs (wife, Pamela), Joplin, Mo.; one daughter, Cathy Bolek (husband, Steve), Baxter Springs; one brother, Ronal "Sonny" McGregor, Baxter Springs; one sister, Pat Warstler, Baxter Springs; and two grandchildren, Brett Skaggs, Los Angeles, Calif., and Chad Reed, Iola, Kan.
She was entrusted to Derfelt's Baxter Chapel for cremation. Family plans to celebrate Barbara's life with a private family and friend dinner at the church.
In lieu of flowers, her friends are asked to go do a good deed for someone else in Barbara's honor.
