Clay Wilbur DeMasters age 82, of Joplin Mo., passed away April 3, 2017. He was born March 18, 1935, in Newton County Mo. He was the second of four children of Clova and Mary (Fergerson) DeMasters.
Clay was an 11-year veteran of the United States Air Force, and served as a Radar Operator in Japan and Vietnam. He retired from the United States Post Office, in Joplin, in 1990.
Clay married the late Donna Jean (Smith) DeMasters February 2, 1959, at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Missouri. They had three children, Mary, Kathy, and Peter. Donna passed away January 2, 1985.
Clay married Clara Joan Shalz on April 26, 1986, she survives.
In addition to his wife, Clay is survived by his sister, Shirley (DeMasters) Cross and brother-in-law Kenneth Cross; his brother, David DeMasters, of Joplin; his children, Mary (DeMasters) Sams and her husband, Dan, of Roland, Okla., Kathy (DeMasters) Cline, of Joplin, Peter DeMasters and his wife, Carmen, of Morgantown, W.V. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Ty and Heather Sams, Jacob and Jordin Sams, and Danielle Sams; Joshua and Allison Cline; Theresa DeMasters, Justine (DeMasters) and Martin Johnston, Audrey DeMasters and Peter Dominic DeMasters; and 11 greatgrandchildren as well as numerous step-children, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Clay was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Marshall; and his first wife, Donna.
Clay was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, golfer and fisherman and enjoyed his retirement to the fullest. Clay and his wife, Clara, spent many years of their retirement in the Chapala area of Jalisco, Mexico.
Clay was a 22-year member of the Jehovah's Witnesses West Congregation, in Joplin, and served many years as a Pioneer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care, in Joplin.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 6, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses West, 1201 South Schifferdecker Avenue, Joplin.
