Donald Hefley Donald Hefley, 90, of Columbus, Kan., passed from this life on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at Medicalodge of Columbus. Don was born on October 17, 1927, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to the union of Floyd Wesley and Vivian Irene (Lichtenwalter) Hefley.
After graduating from Columbus in 1945, Don enlisted into the United States Army serving during the Korean Occupation. He later went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Kansas State University. He managed the Baxter Springs Farmers CO-OP for 33 years before his retirement. He also worked on the family farm raising Herford cattle and growing crops.
Don was a member of the Neutral United Methodist Church. He served on the Baxter Springs Historical Society board, American Bank board, and the Baxter Springs Chamber of Commerce. When his children were young he volunteered with 4-H. Later in life, Don enjoyed attending auctions and garage sales. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and being outdoors. Also, anytime Kansas State was playing sports he loved listening to them on the radio.
Don was united in marriage to Wilma Edith (Newton) Hefley on June 12, 1948. Wilma preceded Don in death on March 19, 2005. They had two children, Robert Hefley (Connie) of Baxter Springs; daughter, Nancy Moore and husband, Clare, of Hesston, Kan.
Don later married Marjorie Lee (French) on September 23, 2012, in Neutral, Kan. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include brother, James "Jim" Hefley and wife, Lillian, of Baxter Springs; five grandchildren, Gretchen Packer (Jeff), Bethany Campbell (Andrew), Robert Moore (Kylie), Wesley Hefley (Sara) and Bradley Hefley (Ashley); along with seven great-grandchildren.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, first spouse, and an infant brother at birth.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 8, at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Pastor Neal Anderson will officiate. Family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2-3 p.m., at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the Baxter Springs Historical Society or the Neutral United Methodist Church. Pallbearers for the service are Robert Moore, Brad Hefley, Wes Hefley, Andrew Campbell, Jeff Packer and Clare Moore.
