Eugenia Michele Phillips


JOPLIN - Eugenia "Genie" Michele (Cantrell) Phillips, 72, previously of Baxter Springs, passed away on Sunday, March 31st, 2019 at Joplin Gardens in Joplin, Missouri.
Genie was born November 28, 1946, in Joplin, Missouri to Bette L. Cantrell.
She attended school in Baxter Springs, graduating in 1964. Genie went on to graduate from Kansas State College of Pittsburg (now PSU) in 1968, with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. She then accepted a teaching position at Central Elementary School in Baxter Springs where she taught 4th grade for most of her 32 year career until her retirement in 2000. Following retirement, she continued to substitute in Baxter Springs and Riverton for many years.
She loved children and teaching. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, but most of all, she loved Jesus. She was a founding member of Spring River Assembly of God in Riverton, Kansas, where she taught Sunday School and sang on the praise team for a number of years.
Genie married Ralph D. Phillips on Dec. 14, 1968, in Baxter Springs, Kansas. They celebrated 46 years together before his passing in 2015.
Genie was also preceded in death by her mother, Bette L. Cantrell; a sister, Rebecca "Becki" L. (Cantrell) Burggraf; and two of her grandchildren.
Survivors include: two sons: Jeffrey [Kristen] Phillips, of Webb City, and Adam Phillips [Carrie], of Joplin; a daughter, Ashley [Brandon] Elliott, of Raymore, Missouri; three sisters-in-law: Shirley [Frank] Herford, of Pittsburg, Joyce [Rev. Leslie] Norris, of Parsons, and Doreda Speer, of Virginia; two brothers-in-law: Steven Phillips ,of Parsons and Clarence "Gus" Burggraf, Jr., of Joplin; eight grandchildren: Trenton [Macey] Phillips, Courtney Phillips, Cayden Phillips, Addison Phillips, Alaina Elliott, Taylor Edwards, Trevor Lewellen, and Tristan Beatty; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 4th, at Spring River Assembly of God Church, Riverton. A celebration of her life will also be at Spring River Assembly of God Church, just off 400 highway on 3rd street in Riverton at 10am on Friday, April 5th with Rev. Roger Scantlin officiating.
