Herschel Jerry "Bill" Salchow, age 89, Carl Junction, Mo., passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017, at the home of his good friend, Jerry Hoffman, in Oronogo, after a lengthy illness.
Bill was born May 29, 1938, in Billings, Mo., son of the late Bill Salchow and Clara Hutter Salchow. "Pee Wee" attended school in Billings, graduated from Billings High School in 1946. He was encouraged to join the United States Army in December of 1950, and he served in Okinawa with the 467th Aviation as a mechanic.
He returned to Missouri and worked for MFA Creamery, in Springfield, and then moved to the Joplin area where he worked for 31 years as a mechanic for Ozark Airlines. He was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church, and was known in the Carl Junction area where he rode his bike everywhere. "Pops" told his good friend, Jerry, that his day wasn't complete unless he was able to "kid someone".
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Burton, Clarence, Jim, and Raymond Salchow; a sister, Lorene Kuhns; and a son, Gregory Salchow.
Survivors include his children, Mark Salchow and wife, Laura, of Joplin, and Kim Fryer and husband, John, of Carl Junction; grandchildren, Ellen Salchow, Chelsea Mertens, Adysen Mertens, Adam Mertens; his twin sister, Lucille Page, of Rogersville, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; and his good friend and caregiver over the last several years, Jerry Hoffman, of Carl Junction.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. at Smart Cemetery, Billings, Mo. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, Pops and Jerry want everyone to show some form of extra love to those around you.
