Irene Lewis, 92, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Freeman Hospital West, in Joplin, after a recent decline in health.
Irene entered this life on November 10, 1925, in Dodge City, Kan., daughter of the late Glen and Louvina (Quillen) Thomas. She was raised and attended school in Dodge City.
On September 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to Bert Lewis Sr., and to this union a daughter and son were born.
They moved their family to Joplin, in 1946. Irene assisted in the operation of the family needlework business through the early 1970s and was able to travel extensively. She then worked as a bookkeeper at Christman's Department Store and Macy's and she was a saleswoman at Hows-man's, retiring in 1995.
Irene was very creative and was a talented seamstress and decorator and she passed on her many talents to her family. She showed love and kindness to everyone she came into contact with and will always be loved and missed beyond words.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert Lewis Sr.; a sister, Alice Harns; and three brothers, Gene, Floyd and Bill Thomas.
Irene is survived by her two children, Judy Jackson and husband, Don, of Prairie Village, Kan., and Bert Lewis and wife, Lisa, of Joplin; four grandchildren, Jeff Jackson and wife, Keri, Jason Jackson, Kim Adams and husband, Stefan, and Lacey Jordan and husband, Mike; eight great-grandchildren, Caleb Adams, Landon Jackson, Jack Adams, Michael Jordan, Fisher Jackson, Isaac Jordan, Audrey Jordan and Tess Adams; a sister, Mary Jane Brooks and husband, Carl, of Garland, Texas; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services for Irene Lewis are 10 a.m. Monday, December 4, in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, in Joplin, with Pastor Marilyn O'Brien officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, in Joplin. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Bert Lewis, Stefan Adams, Jim Lewis, Caleb Adams, Jack Adams and Mike Lewis. Honorary pallbearers are Don Jackson, Jeff Jackson, Jason Jackson, Landon Jackson and Fisher Jackson. The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 2-4:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Joplin Humane Society, in care of the mortuary.
