Joe Douthat DeVilliers, 88, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed from this life on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Grandwood Assisted Living, Grove, Okla.
Joe was born on April 10, 1929, in Baxter Springs, to the union of Benjamin Elmire and Minnie Esther (Douthat) DeVilliers. He graduated from Baxter Springs High School and was a lifetime resident. Joe worked for B.F. Goodrich until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs. He enjoyed building furniture, fishing, and could fix anything that needed repair.
Joe was united in marriage to Alice Jean (Abbott) DeVilliers on June 27, 1948, in Baxter Springs. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Connie Compton and husband, Gregg, of Grove, and Cathy Barker and husband, Dave, of Lawrence, Kan.; grandchildren, Mike Barker and wife, Kris, along with great-grandson, Ashton Barker, of Kansas City, Mo., and Jeff Barker and wife, Krista, of Holden, Mass. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Minnie DeVilliers; two sisters, Maxine Handcock and Pauline Derfelt; one brother, Jack DeVilliers.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, November 6, at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Street will officiate. Family will receive friends Monday morning from 10-11:15 a.m., at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Compasses or Good Shepard Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
