Judy Ann (Haymaker) Hayes, 79, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away at home surrounded by family on March 3, 2018.
Judy was born to Cecil and Pauline (Ball) Haymaker on October 12, 1938, in Hockerville, Okla. She attended Quapaw, Okla. schools where she graduated as valedictorian.
She married Eugene L Hayes in 1956.
Judy attended Joplin Jr. College and received both a bachelors and masters from Pittsburg State University. She taught in the Baxter Springs (Kan.) school system for 29 years, and was concurrently a Walmart associate, in Baxter, for five years. She and her husband opened and owned the Subway Sandwich Shop, in Baxter, and had rental property in Baxter and Galena. In later years, she served as a teacher's aide at Rushton Elementary School, in Mission, Kan.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Cecil (Butch) Haymaker; and her husband of 54 years, Gene.
She is survived by her loving sister, Paula Spencer (Joe), of KCKS; her son, Doug Hayes (Ruth), of rural Holden, Mo.; and her daughter, Dr Robin Bowen (Doug), of Russellville, Ark. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren, Brock, Alexa and Brynn Bowen, and Matthew Hayes. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Judy enjoyed attending activities at Matt Ross Community Center and was a member of St Marks Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 7, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., with service immediately thereafter at St Marks Methodist Church, 6422 Santa Fe Drive, in Mission.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to St Jude's Children's Hospital.
In addition, a visitation and celebration of Judy's life will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at Derfelt Funeral Homes in Baxter Springs.
