On Oct. 12, 1915, Margaret Rose Sheppard was born to Hayden and Grace (Moore) Sheppard, Kenoma, Barton County, Mo.
She would begin her lifelong nursing career after graduating from Lamar High School, in 1933, and then Wesley School of Nursing, in Wichita, Kan., in 1935. Before coming back to Lamar, she worked as a private nurse for the George family of Wichita.
On Aug. 4th, 1940, Margaret was united in marriage with Leon Chester Couch, son of Richard and Goldie (McCoy) Couch. On March 7th, 1945, they welcomed their first child, Robert Leon Couch. Then, on June 18th, 1949, their daughter, Beth Ann Couch, was born.
Margaret and Leon would both become integral members of the Lamar community. Leon served as the principal of Lamar High School for 27 years until his death in 1969. Margaret joined the PEO Sisterhood in 1958 and remained an active member for over 50 years. She also worked as the director of nursing at the Chastain's Nursing Home (Truman Healthcare) for over 15 years. Leon and Margaret were active members of the Lamar United Methodist Church.
Surviving include a son, Bob (Marilyn) Couch, Lamar; daughter, Beth (Anthony) Brisbin, Lamar; grandchildren, Rob (Colleen) Couch, Jenni Couch, Drew Couch, Jon (Tisha) Brisbin and Maggie (Josh) Allen; great-grandchildren, Quinlan and Elise Couch, Blake Elam, Jack Brisbin, Benjamin, Daniel, Morgan and Hannah Brisbin, and Jesicah Allen. In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded by her sisters, Mildred Mygatt, Gladys Kiloh, Alberta Hale and Betty Kentner.
Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 25, at Lamar United Methodist Church.
