Paul C. Buckner, 93, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed from this life on Sunday, December 31, 2017, at Landmark Hospital, Joplin, Mo.
Paul was born on Sept. 5, 1924, in Cauthron, Ark., to the union of James C. and Lexie E. (Young) Buckner. Paul and his family moved to Baxter Springs when he was 4 years old. Paul attended Baxter Springs Schools and in 1942 joined the United States Marine Corps, just short of one semester from graduating high school. He served in the South Pacific until January of 1945.
When Paul returned home he was united in marriage to Evelyn (Robinson) Buckner on May 19, 1945, at the parsonage of the First Baptist Church, Baxter Springs.
Paul worked as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1972 after 29 years of service. Since Paul had enlisted in the Marine Corps and missed graduation, he was later honored and received his high school diploma in 2003. He was dedicated to the Baxter Springs Fire Department, where he served for 65 years as a volunteer. Paul enjoyed fishing and was known to be a handy man that could fix anything.
Paul is survived by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn Buckner, of the home; sister, Wanda Messer, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; brother, David Buckner and wife, Betty, of Joplin; along with many nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Wayne, Hershel, Donald, and Billy Buckner.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Pastor Shane Dotson will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Baxter Springs Cemetery.
