Phyllis Mardelle O'Connell, 84, of Frontenac, Kan., passed away at 6:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 20, 1933, at Coffeyville, Kan., the daughter of Carl Alva and Dorothy Janet (VanBrabant) Wilson. She was a lifetime area resident and graduated from Pittsburg High School and Kansas State Teachers College, now PSU.
On June 20, 1954, she was united in marriage to Patrick John O'Connell at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2015.
Mrs. O'Connell taught kindergarten and second grade at Skelly Elementary, in Eldorado and Washington, and George Nettels Elementary, in Pittsburg, before devoting herself to raising and enjoying her family.
Membership was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Sean O'Connell and his wife, Kindra, of Pittsburg; four daughters, Michelle Rondeau and her husband, Mark, of Great Bend, Kan., Maureen Hughes and her husband, William, of Joplin, Mo., Milissa Brunetti and her husband, Rick, of Topeka, Kan., and Jennifer Brunetti and her husband, Lee, of Frontenac; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Norma Broome, and a grandson, Nicholas Brunetti.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 20) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Stroot as celebrant. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brenner Mortuary, where the family will receive friends following until 8 p.m.
The family suggest memorials be given to the Ronald McDonald House. These may be left at, or mailed to, the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th Street, Pittsburg, KS 66762.
