Richard D. Boyt

Events

Richard D. Boyt passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, August 2nd, 2019 at the age of 93. Richard was a well-known artist and teacher at Crowder College and headed the art department there from 1968 until his retirement in 1989.
Besides his passion for education, Richard had wide ranging interests that resulted innovations in many other the fields. He taught himself spherical geometry and invented a new class of geodesic domes that he dubbed "Rotegrity". His insight into aerodynamics formed the basis for Crowder's Star II solar car. Richard's commitment to land stewardship resulted in being awarded "Missouri Tree Farmer of the Year" in 2006 for his sustainable practices on the family forest that he and his wife established. He pioneered work in wood combustion that created new types of cooking stoves for the 3rd world, and his "hot hose" solar water heater has been adapted in developing countries around the world.
Richard was born April 3, 1926 in Des Moines, IA, and is survived by his sister Christy McFarland, four children, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Ray, his wife Libby, and brother Jack. His vision, generosity, and love for family will be greatly missed.
The family invites his friends to a visitation and remembrance at Northwood Art and Event Center (formerly the Congregational Church, north of the Neosho Square) from 4:30 to 6:30 on Friday, August 9.
In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to the "Richard Boyt Art Scholarship" through the Crowder College Foundation.

A really good man. I remember him most from the "STAR" solar car in 1988-89. It was a memorable year to be able to follow the team in Australia. I still have my visor & picture. My deepest condolences.
