Richard Allen Purdy, age 80, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed away at Freeman West Hospital, in Joplin, Mo., following a short illness.
Richard was born on Dec. 4, 1937, in Pittsburg, Kan., to the union of Chester Leroy Purdy and Mary Louise (Pottoroff) Purdy. He graduated from Pittsburg High School with the class of 1955.
After graduation, Richard enlisted in the US Air Force. He served active duty from 1955-1959, and reserves from 1959-1962. He later enlisted in the US Army Reserves and served from 1977-1995. During his time in the service, he was able to travel to all 50 states, England, Okinawa, Egypt, the Netherlands, Austria, and Germany.
He worked as a welder at Eagle Picher, in Galena, Kan., for 21 years before it's closing in the early 1980s. He later worked for the Baxter USD 508 as a member of the maintenance crew for 10 years. During his free time, he enjoyed playing Bingo and quarter-slot machines at the local casinos.
Richard was united in marriage with Mary Helen (Gwatney) Purdy on Feb. 16, 1959, in North Little Rock, Ark. Together, they enjoyed square dancing, round dancing, and clogging. She preceded him in death in 2006.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Chester Purdy and Mary McCabe; twin sons, Michael and Mitchell Purdy; one brother, Larry Purdy; and one sister, Goldia Snow.
Survivors include three daughters, Sherri McCaslin (husband, Brad), of Carl Junction, Mo., Terri Purdy-Leeper (husband, Terry), of Baxter Springs, and Lori Tindel, of Pittsburg; six grandchildren, Erin McCaslin, of Carl Junction, Valerie Purdy, of Penfield, Ill., Samantha Doubledee (husband, Nathan)m of Carl Junction, Amber Quallsm of Baxter Springs, Chase Tindelm of Seattle, Wash., and John Tindel, of Pittsburg; as well as seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Mt. Olive Cemetery, in Pittsburg, on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. Pastor Geoff Buffalo will officiate. Visitation will be held at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 6-7 p.m.
