Roger Lee Sherman

February 18, 1935 - December 29, 2018

Roger Lee Sherman Sherman, Roger
Roger Sherman, 83, of Sun Lakes passed away peacefully at home on December 29, 2018. Roger was born February 18, 1935 in Joplin, Missouri to the late Lee and Faye Sherman. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1953 and married his high school sweetheart, the late Marilyn Sherman on December 28, 1957. Together, they raised a family in Overland Park, Kansas and retired near their grandchildren in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Roger was committed to a life of learning, earning degrees in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas and Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas in 1966. He began his professional career with Phillips Petroleum and the USDA, but in 1980 committed to "being his own boss" by opening a successful legal practice in Overland Park, Kansas. Roger applied his legal skills and strong faith to graciously and selflessly serving his family, friends, community, and church. One could always find a stack of books near his favorite chair as he prepared for Sunday School or studied countries to explore. Roger cherished his world travels, but nothing beat a good (or bad) day of fishing at Bennett Springs, Missouri or on the Atlantic ocean with his son-in-law. Freshwater trout never stood a chance, and in October 2016, the State of North Carolina recognized his exceptional skill with a citation for achievement after catching the big one (red drum). He is survived by devoted son Craig and wife Kathy Sherman of Chandler, AZ, and daughter Amy and husband David Mitchell of Holly Ridge, NC. Grandchildren include Addison, Lily, and Joshua of Chandler, AZ and Tyler and Amanda of Loganville, GA. Roger's fiancee, Jenna Oliver of Sun Lakes, has been his source of companionship and love. Friends and loved ones are invited to a memorial service at Sun Lakes United Methodist Church on February 16, 2019 at 10:00am. A private family burial will occur this summer in Joplin, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Sun Lakes United Methodist Church.
