Scarlet's Story

Scarlet Emma Elizabeth Upton, age 72, of Quapaw, Okla., passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017, at her home, following an extended illness.
Scarlet was born in Vallejo, Calif., in 1945 to the late Lt. Commander, Charles A. and Inez Kemp.
She married Jerry Upton on January 18, 1967, in Miami, Okla. They moved back to California where she was a tax consultant and homemaker. There, they raised four boys from previous marriages until 1977 when they moved to Quapaw.
Scarlet was a member of Shirts an Skirts, Eagle Pitcher Squares, and Western Twirlers Square Dance Club, as well as founding member of the Joplin Square Dance Center.
Other than her parents, Scarlet is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Upton, and one granddaughter, Hope Upton.
Scarlet is survived by four sons and their wives, Andrew and Stacey, Ron and Elizabeth, Mark and Jo Anne, Jon and Chareta, all of Quapaw; a half brother to three of the boys, George Stockdale of California; brother, Doug Kemp and his wife, Marilyn; 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for both Scarlet and Jerry will be April 29th at 2 p.m. at the Tennessee Praire Church of Galena, Kan.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Four State Cremation, Joplin, Mo.
