Alice's Story

Mrs. Alice E. Hosfield, age 81, of Joplin, Mo., passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017, at her home surrounded by family. Alice was born in Ottawa County, Okla., on March 20, 1936, to the late Charles and Marguerite (Osborne) Bauman.
She moved to Joplin in 1946 and attended St. Peter's High School, graduating in 1954. She furthered her education at Joplin Junior College and went on to receive her Bachelor's in Education from Pittsburg State University, graduating in 1958.
In August 1958, Alice was united in marriage with Thomas C. Hosfield and together they shared 49 years of marriage until his passing on December 26, 2007.
Alice had a love of traveling and she resided in several states throughout her lifetime, including New York, New Jersey, Florida and Connecticut. She taught school for a number of years and later made her career at home as a homemaker caring for her family.
Alice had a very giving heart and she was largely involved in volunteer work, including Meals on Wheels, helping children of migrant farmworkers, Crosslines Ministries and visiting the homebound. She loved working in her yard, gardening and caring for her family. She looked forward to her annual journey to Florida with her sisters each year. Alice was a member of the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. She was also a long-time member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Webb City, and she had a great love for her church family. Her smiling face will be missed at the dessert table.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas; infant son, Thomas Patrick; a brother, Ernest Bauman; and three sisters, Pearl Johnson, Faye Royer and Genevieve Gilbreth.
Survivors include her three children, Kathy Hosfield, of Ashburn, Va., Mary Poage, of Carl Junction, Mo., and Tim Hosfield, of New Castle, Colo.; five grandchildren, Meridith McMillan, of Louisville, Ky., Patrick Poage and wife, Amy, of San Jose, Calif., Joanna Poage, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Molly and Katie Poage, of Carl Junction; two sisters, Pat Arink, of St. Louis, Mo., and Jo Ann Westbrook, of Fargo, N.D.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Toft and husband, Bob, of Duquesne, Mo., and Betty Cope, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass for Alice is 10 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Webb City, with Father Rahab Isidor officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, in Neosho. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Crosslines or Joplin Area Catholic Schools, in care of the mortuary.
