Austin A. Harrison, 97, of Plano, Texas, and formerly of Joplin, Mo., passed away May 29, 2017.
Born in Stockton, Mo., and raised in Carthage, Mo., Mr. Harrison founded and developed KSWM radio and KSWM television Channel 12 (now KODE) and was active in Joplin civic affairs. An MBA graduate of Harvard Business School, he was a recognized and sought after authority on communications networks. He was a consultant to NASA space program. He founded and developed television Channel 38 (now WSBK) in Boston, Mass. He later worked for Fidelity Investments to develop several new lines of business including mutual funds. He secured FCC licenses to support a microwave communications company he co-founded and now known as MCI.
Mr. Harrison is survived by five of eight children he raised with Eleanor Pingree Harrison of Joplin, pre-deceased, plus 29 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Harrison also is survived by his two step-sons from a second marriage to Dorothy Rollins Warden Harrison of Carthage, also pre-deceased.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at the Weston United Methodist Church in Weston, Mass.
