Barbara's Story

Text size

Barbara Butts, 66, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., after a brief stay. Barbara had struggled with a chronic medical condition for the past few years.
Born on April 17, 1950, to Willard and Ruth Butts, in Joplin, Mo., Barbara lived in Joplin up through the late 1970s, when she relocated to the west coast to be near her family. Over the next 20 years, she lived in Orange County, Calif., and Phoenix from 1978 to 1988; and Spokane, Wash., from 1988 to 1997, before returning to the Phoenix area where she resided in Gilbert and Mesa until the time of her passing.
Throughout her life, Barbara was truly a giving person. She was always thinking of other people and would consistently put the needs of others before her own. She went out of her way to make special occasions for others more memorable. Barbara was a good listener, and was always more interested to hear what others were doing than to talk about herself. She was 'Aunt B' to her nieces and nephews and showered them with attention and love.
Barbara's gift of giving and caring about others was no better demonstrated than in her final job before retiring. As an 11th hour attendant for Hospice of the Valley, Barbara sat with and cared for dying patients, often overnight, giving needed respite to the attending family members.
While attending the University of Missouri, Barbara became a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Barbara was a Christian, was raised in the United Methodist Church, and attended Mission Community Church, in Gilbert.
Barbara is survived by brothers, Willard (Kathy), and Brian; nieces, Leslie and Krystina; and nephews, Austin and Carson; and Joplin cousins, Gil (Susan) Stevens, Steve (Susan) Satterlee, Sana (Frank) Shagets and cousin-in-law, Jon Dermott. Her cousin, Courtney Dermott, preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 24, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City. A hosted luncheon will immediately follow at Granny's Shaffer's Restaurant on Range Line.
