Barbara Jean Sikes, 84, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed to glory on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, Mo.
Barbara was born on February 5, 1933, in Afton, Okla., to the union of Flavious Cornelious and Flossie Mae (Sweatman) O'Gara.
Barbara was united in marriage to Walter R. Sikes on August 6, 1950, in Eureka Springs, Ark. She enjoyed being an Air Force wife for 22 years.
After moving to Baxter Springs, she enjoyed family and friends, by serving in her church, cooking men's prayer breakfast and being a part of Lou Johnson's Sunday School class. She volunteered at the Historical Museum, thrift shop, delivering meals on wheels, and especially taking care of the love of her life, Walter. She longed for the day to be reunited with him in Heaven. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Baxter Springs. She will be missed deeply by extended family and friends.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, F.C. O'Gara, Jr.
Barbara is survived by one son, Alan Sikes and wife, Barbara, of Bentonville, Ark.; two daughters, Debbie Massengale and husband, Rick, of Baxter Springs, and Becky Long and husband, Chester, of Canyon Lake, Texas; one sister, Betty Hill, of Grove City, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Barbara O'Gara, of Bartlesville, Okla.; six grandchildren, Ginger Long (Travis), Allyson Neal (Steven), Matthew Sikes (Drew), Lucas Massengale (Courtney), Spenser Massengale (Kayla), Mirinda Massengale; two step grandchildren, Richard Massengale (Rochelle) and Karen Osborn (James), eight great-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 12, at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Street will officiate. Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels or the Thrift Shop in care of the funeral home.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
