Edward's Story

Text size

Edward Steffan was born East St. Louis, Ill. In 1922, to Edward and Minerva Steffan. He entered into rest on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Neosho, Mo., at the age of 95. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and was in the signal corps.
While stationed at Ft. Crowder, in Neosho, he met his future wife, Dorotha Mason. He used the excuse of going downtown Neosho on Saturdays to purchase a half dozen pairs of socks from Bushmeyer's Five and Dime, just so he could talk to Dorotha. After his discharge in 1944, he married Dorotha in 1946 and they moved to East St. Louis.
In 1947, they returned to Neosho and he began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., and in 1960 the family moved to Branson, where he worked for an independent telephone company. In 1965, he went to work for Harris/McBernie Telephone Co., traveling to Saudi Arabia, Jamaica and other foreign countries. Edward was a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorotha, in 2015; his daughter, Tonda Woods, in 2010; son-in-law, Jerry Woods, June 6, 2017; sister, Delores Sweney; and his parents.
Ed leaves behind one daughter, Cynthia Schwartz and husband, Gene, of Neosho; three grandsons, Christopher Vandergriff, Matthew Vandergriff and Jason Woods; one granddaughter, Kerrie Bertrand; and six great-grandchildren, Nathan, Justin, Bradley, Zachary, Ashleigh and Taylor.
