Lynn's Story

Text size

Lynn Cragin Prescott (1920-2017, born Mary Evelyn Cragin) died peacefully at home in California on July 1, surrounded by family. Lynn was the second child of John Harold Cragin and Georgia Marshall of Joplin, Missouri. She is the sister of Betty Eckhart (late of Sarcoxie) and John Cragin of Joplin.

She met a young army officer stationed at Camp Crowder, Dana Serr Prescott, and they married at Stanford Chapel in 1943. They remained happily married until his death in 1990. Dana, a career army officer, and Lynn traveled the globe together with a wide variety of duty assignments in Iran, Germany, and across the United States.
Throughout such a nomadic life, they always returned to Joplin and Sarcoxie.

Wherever she found herself, Lynn volunteered in the community, helping through the Red Cross, Allied Arts, and many other organizations. She also enjoyed a career in commercial modeling. She wrote a memoir of their years living in Iran in the late 1940s, titled Persian Version. Lynn loved music and dance, and made sure her children knew the Joplin Hop. An avid gardener and self-taught handyman, Lynn's project in later life became her beautiful home in California. People were often astonished to find Lynn on her roof, well into her 80s, repairing gutters and shingles. She was endlessly industrious, a model of hard work.

She is survived by her children, Dana Cragin Prescott (Kathy), Daniel Marshall Prescott (Gail), Galyn Prescott Metcalf (John) and William (Bill) Harold Prescott (Susan); her brother John Cragin (Joy); twelve grandchildren, Michaela Prescott (Brian Sytsma), Krista Prescott (Bard Nielsen), Tessa Prescott Kelly (Gavin), Moriah Prescott (Gary Black), Ashley Lesser (Scott), John Prescott Metcalf, Ryan Metcalf (Meghan Powers), Chris Metcalf (Marina Rosique), Dana Metcalf (Norman Greenfield), Jack Prescott, Julia Prescott and Francesca Prescott; and six great grandchildren, Archer Sytsma, Dominic Sytsma, Ryan Nielsen, Keeva Kelly, Evelyn Black, and Isla Metcalf. She is predeceased by two grandchildren, Ryan Prescott and Kathryn Metcalf.

A private Memorial Service will be held for family and close friends in November. If you wish to make a memorial donation, Sempervirens Fund was one of Lynn's favorite charities (www.sempervirens.org).
