RIVERTON, Kan. - Melvin W. Richey, age 78, passed away at 8:35 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, with his family by his side, following a valiant battle with lung cancer.
Melvin was born June 7, 1938, in Baxter Springs, Kan. His parents were Robert and Gertie (Angel) Richey. He attended school in Baxter Springs, and graduated from Baxter Springs High School in 1956.
Melvin was united in marriage to the love of his life, Connie D. Craig, on November 25, 1965, in Baxter Springs. She preceded him in death June 6, 2011.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marie.
Melvin worked for the Riverton School District for over 30 years, and retired as the director of maintenance. He enjoyed many activities of the Riverton School system and was a strong supporter of Riverton High School athletic teams. Membership was held at Parkhill Nazarene Church, Galena, Kan., where he enjoyed contributing to the construction of the fellowship hall. He had also been a member in the former Riverton-Lowell Lions Club. He was an avid gardener and gave away much of the fruits of his large garden. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, spending time with his grandchildren, and spoiling his little dog, Bubba.
Surviving is one son, Craig Richey and wife, Julie, of Pittsburg, Kan.; two grandchildren, who were the joys of his life, Katherine Elizabeth Richey and James Parker Richey. Also surviving are two brothers, Glen Richey, Tulsa, Okla., and Lawrence Richey, Baxter Springs; one sister, Charlotte Ruth Click, Galena; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 14, at Parkhill Nazarene Church, Galena. Pastor Tracy Rowe will officiate. Burial will be in Lowell (Kan.) Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m., Thursday, April 13, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Riverton Education Foundation, in care of the funeral home, where a scholarship will be set up in Melvin's memory.
