Phyllis Eugenia (Smith) McStay Baser, 95, of Alba, Mo., passed away on May 11, 2017, in Bradenton, Fla. Burial services will be held at the Friends Cemetery, Purcell, Mo., on Tuesday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m.
Mrs. Baser was born in Alba, to David and Lavina Smith on October 23, 1921. She graduated from Alba High School in 1939, and then attended Joplin Community College. She attended Nurses' Training at General Hospital, in Kansas City, Mo., where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in December of 1945.
Following employment as a nurse in Ohio, she married Frank W. McStay Sr., of Milwaukee, Wis., on March 12, 1949, in Zanesville, Ohio. Phyllis and Frank had four children. Frank passed away in 1959.
Phyllis moved with the children to Joplin, Mo. to be close to family, and returned to work as a nurse.
They moved to Topeka, Kan. in 1962, following her marriage to Dr. Ali Baser, of Istanbul, Turkey, on April 7. In the years that followed Phyllis and Ali made their home in Kansas, Mississippi, California, and Germany prior to retiring in Bradenton, in 2003.
Phyllis was a member of the women's philanthropic organization PEO for many years, and enjoyed needlepoint. She loved cooking and baking and will be remembered by her friends and family for the wonderful dishes she created.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Raymond, Steven, Mary, Joan and Basil.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Ali; children: daughter, Keri and John House, daughter, Patricia Baser and husband, Bill, son, Frank and Mitzi McStay, daughter, Diane and Luis Villegas; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
