William's Story

William Dabney Smith, of Quapaw, Okla., passed from this life on Friday, February 24, 2017, at Windridge Nursing Center in Miami, Okla. He was 95.
Dabney was born September 14, 1921, in Quapaw to Percy Monroe and Josephine (Hicks) Smith. He was a lifetime Quapaw resident, graduating from Quapaw High School in 1940. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946.
Dabney married Virginia Lee VanSant on January 3, 1947, in Columbus, Kan.
He graduated from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami and later received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Tulsa in 1949.
Dabney was co-owner of Smith Insurance Agency in Quapaw, was Vice-President and Director of the Bank of Quapaw from 1961 to 1965. He and his wife, Virginia, owned the Bank of Wyandotte for 17 years where he was the Bank President.
Dabney was very active in the community, serving as Mayor of Quapaw from 1960 to 1965, he served on the Ottawa County Rural Water Board for District 1 from 1968 to 1974, and was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Quapaw, Miami Lodge No. 140 A.F.&A.M., Tulsa Scottish Rite Consistory, and Akdar Shrine Temple in Tulsa. He also had been a longtime member of Miami Golf and Country Club in Miami and was a long time member of the Wyandotte Lions Club.
Dabney was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lee VanSant Smith, on November 20, 2016; his parents; his brothers, Percy Smith, Jr., Joseph J. Smith, and Marshall Smith; and his siser-in-law, Gladys Smith.
Survivors include his son, Dabney Smith, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Wyandotte, Okla.; his sister -in-law, Corinne Smith, of Miami, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and his granddog, Nessie.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 1, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Quapaw with Rev. Tim Mixson officiating. Interment will be in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami with Marshall Smith, Jr., Rich Lillard, Mike Nelson, Charles Dabney Duncan, Ted Fletcher, and Larry Duree serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Art Cousatte, Mike Maxwell, and H.C. Bauman. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paul Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Miami.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Assn. or First United Methodist Church in Quapaw.
