August "Gus" B. Shaffar, age 85, of Grove, Okla., passed away on Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
Gus was born on Feb. 16, 1931, to Marion and Allie (Ferrell) Shaffar, in St. Louis, Mo. He grew up and attended school in Morehouse, Mo.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following his military service, Gus continued his education at the University of Missouri-Columbia in St. Louis.
Gus successfully owned and operated "Gus Shaffar Ford Lincoln Mercury", in Joplin, Mo., until retiring in 1997. He was inducted into the South East Missouri Baseball Hall of Fame Dec. 5, 1992.
Gus and his family moved to Grove in 2004, and he attended Grace Harbor Church, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and he was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a son, Daniel Shaffar.
Gus is survived by: Terri Shaffar and their two daughters, Rebekah and Tarah, all of Grove; sons, Steve Shaffar and wife, Marsha, of Jasper, Ala., Doug Shaffar of Colorado; daughter, Nancy Shaffar Loney, of Richardson, Texas, stepdaughter, Amy Smith, of Miami, Okla., and stepson, Mike Roberts, of Springhill, Kan., 10 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Nichols Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Nichols Funeral Chapel, Grove. Interment at Buzzard Cemetery.
