Darrell Lee Turner Obituary

Baxter Springs, Kansas - Darrell Lee Turner, age 95, passed away Wednesday morning, February 19th, 2025 at the Quaker Hill nursing home. He recently moved there from his home of 68 years on Chouteau Avenue in Baxter Springs, Kansas.

He was born in Baxter Springs on January 24th, 1930 to Lee B. Turner and Buelah E Turner (Wade). He attended Baxter Springs schools, and graduated from Baxter Springs High School in 1948. He later attended college at Northeast Oklahoma in Tahlequah, and Pittsburg State University.

On April 9th, 1953, he was united in marriage to Beatrice Nadine Armstrong, who passed away on Feb 3rd, 2001.

Darrell retired from the U.S. Postal Service after a long career as a letter carrier. He was also co-owner of Martin Service Station in Iron Gates, Missouri. Darrell had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, often spending his spare time researching technical topics.

He enjoyed outdoor activities his entire life... photography, hiking, hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping and gardening. He was particularly gifted at training dogs, and greatly enjoyed sharing those abilities with family and friends. He took his children and grandchildren camping often and instilled his love of outdoors, animals, and nature in them. Darrell did everything with honesty and integrity. His legacy will live on through his strong and caring relationships in his large extended family.

Darrell was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice, his brother Gene Turner and sister Rita Kay McFadden. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Vernon and Corrine Moore; his sons, Kevin Turner, Nathan Turner (wife Heidi) and Shawn Turner (wife Kim); two daughters, Kristy Foust (husband Ronnie) and Teresa Avicola (husband Curtis). He is survived by 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and an abundance of nieces, nephews and extended family. 'Grandpa D' was deeply loved and respected, and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the staff at Quaker Hill and Compassus Hospice for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Quaker Hill activities fund.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1:00 P.M., Saturday, February 22nd at the Presbyterian Church in Baxter Springs. Graveside services are currently being planned by the family for a later date.
