Kevin Lawrence Dawes
Kevin was born July 9, 1958, in Baxter Springs, to Charles and Lorraine (Mercer) Dawes. He had lived in Baxter Springs since 1984. Kevin graduated from Fort Smith Southside High School class of 1976 and received his Doctor's in Optometry from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah in 1984. He was an optometrist in Baxter Springs for 31 years.
Kevin was a member of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma and he served as First Councilman for many years. He attended Spring River Indian Baptist Church, in Quapaw, Okla., and was active member in Inter Tribal Chapter of the Native American Church. He was involved with Ottawa Pow Wow, as well as serving as head staff for POW Wows throughout Indian Country. He was a respected spiritual and cultural leader and mentor for many people through- out his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lorraine.
Kevin married Sharon (Teehee) Dawes March 12, 1983. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include his son, John Charles "J.C." Dawes and wife, Stefanie, of Quapaw; his daughter, Kari Elaine Barrett and husband, Ryan, of Tahlequah, Okla.; his sister, Charla Dawes, of Quapaw; five grandchildren, Avery Barrett, Noah Barrett, Emilee Craig, Lottie Dawes and Jacy Dawes.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 20, at 2 p.m. at the Ottawa Tribal Building, SE of Miami, Okla. Interment will be in Ottawa Indian Cemetery, SE of Miami. Christopher Wren, Brandon Teehee, John David Ballard, Michael Roy Tyner, Brett Barnes, Charlie Diebold, Trevor White and Jeremy Olsen will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Inter- Tribal Song Chiefs and Dr. Bill Horgan, Dr. Billy Hill, Dr. Bob Smith, Dr. Eric Lynn, Dr. Jerry Bob Carter, Rick Landers and Andy Smith. Kevin will lie in state at the Ottawa Tribal Building by the Pow Wow grounds.
Services have been placed in the care of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home and Cremation Service, of Miami.
