Maynard Mitchell (Maynard)

May 9, 1925 - April 20, 2025

Maynard Maynard Mitchell

Maynard Mitchell, a proud World War II veteran, lifelong educator, and devoted family man, passed away on April 20, 2025, just three weeks shy of his 100th birthday. His life was a testament to resilience, service, and quiet strength that touched generations.
Born in Emporia, Kansas, Maynard grew up in rural Hamilton, where his father worked as a driller in the oil fields. Each day, he walked three and a half miles to and from school—a daily journey he credited for both his development as a runner and his long, active life.
After serving his country with distinction in World War II, Maynard returned home and attended Emporia State Teachers College. He excelled as both a student and a college runner, building on the perseverance and discipline formed in his youth.
Maynard began his career in Valley Center, Kansas, teaching and coaching track and football, while also officiating football and basketball games. He later served as both principal and superintendent in Goodland, Kansas, and concluded his distinguished career as superintendent of schools in Baxter Springs.
A lifelong sportsman, Maynard enjoyed tennis and golf, and proudly celebrated a personal milestone: scoring a hole-in-one. He loved competition, camaraderie, and the joy of staying active.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alice Mitchell. He is survived by his five children—Dale Mitchell, Myron Mitchell, Anita Flanigan, Lyle Mitchell, and Gary Mitchell—along with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of character, compassion, and strength.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 10, 2025, at the Hamilton Methodist Church, followed by a luncheon and graveside service. All are welcome to attend and honor a life well lived.
Maynard Mitchell will be remembered for his deep commitment to education, his honorable military service, and the humility, wisdom, and warmth he shared with everyone he met.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.
