Penelope Ruth Graves (Penny) Obituary

Joplin, Missouri - Penelope Ruth "Penny" Graves went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 28, 2025, in Joplin, Missouri, at the age of 82.

Penny was born on August 7, 1942, in Oakland, California. She spent nearly 20 years in Stockton, California, where she raised her two children, Tim Griffin and Carole Griffin. She later married Perry J. Graves, and after his retirement, they made their home in Joplin to be near his family.

A woman of steadfast faith, Penny was active in several church communities throughout her life. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Stockton with her former husband, Joe Griffin; later, she worshiped at Lincoln Presbyterian Church with Perry, and in her later years, she was a devoted member of College Heights Christian Church in Joplin.

Penny served others joyfully and humbly. In retirement, she gave her time to Freeman Hospital and George Washington Carver National Park. She also provided administrative support to missionaries serving in Hong Kong—an extension of her heart for global ministry and her commitment to the work of the Kingdom. She enjoyed walking her dog, gardening, scrapbooking, and woodcarving with Perry.

She is survived by her children, Tim and Carole; her sister, Josephine Poole; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

Penny's earthly remains will be inurned at the columbarium at Mount Hope Cemetery in Joplin. Her family rejoices in the gift of salvation offered through Jesus Christ our Savior.
