On December 1, 2020, Dr. Saad M. Al-Shathir passed away at the age of 76.
Known to many as "Dr. Al," Saad was born on July 1, 1944, in Baghdad, Iraq, to Mahdi Al-Shathir and Wafique Abed of Amarah, Iraq. He received his medical degree from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in 1967 and completed his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He practiced physical medicine and rehabilitation for 40+ years in the Joplin area.
Saad was one of the founding members of The Islamic Society of Joplin, the first mosque in the area. Known for his generosity and kindness, Saad mentored and supported many members of his family and the local Middle Eastern diaspora. Considered a father figure to many, Saad emphasized the importance of hard work, education, and honesty.
Saad was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Salah. He is survived by his wife, Alyaa Alattar; his three children, Hadi (married to Laura), Jasmine, and Faris; his four grandchildren, Chloe, Chelsea, Laila, and Jada; seven siblings, Awatif, Sabah, Makia, Sami, Bahijah, Najah, and Sahar; and several nephews and nieces.
A simple and humble man, Saad requested no formal funeral service. He was buried on December 3, at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin.
